Today I’m excited to present page 69 excerpts from my personal favorite paranormal genre, Urban Fantasy

So what is this urban fantasy schtick? Think wizards/dragons/were-folk/fae/vampires/the odd goddess…in a city. Chicago, New York, Des Moines—it doesn’t matter as long as it has alleys and the occasional abandoned warehouse.

If the main character is a hero, he’ll probably be a blue-collar warlock with a muggle best friend and a mysterious pet. If she’s a heroine, she’ll have a (possibly gay) paranormal best friend, and at least three super hot guys after her, which she won’t be able to understand because she’s just a normal, average girl who has long red hair, is loyal to her friends and family even though she has issues with one or more parents who (despite being dead) are trying to kill her, and who just happens to like to wear leather, fight vampires, and be a martial arts expert.

Along with vampires, she has always been drawn to stories about what mothers will do for their children. Her first novel, KEEPING SCORE, is about a divorced mom who’ll do anything to get her 9-year-old son onto her town’s best travel baseball team. Currently a resident of St. Petersburg, FL, Jami spent most of her life in the Maryland suburbs of Washington, D.C. After graduating from the University of Maryland with a degree in journalism, Jami spent ten years working in public relations for lobbying groups before turning to fiction. She is also a realtor with Century 21, reviews women’s fiction at www.chicklitcentral.com, and reads for a New York City-based literary agency. “We haven’t had a newbie vamp around here in years. Which means that whoever created Beth probably had a really strong connection with her before he turned her. He was probably waiting for her when she woke up, and took her straight back to his place.”

“Wherever that may be.”

“We’ll find it,” he assures me.

“Hopefully not by following the bloody trail she leaves in her wake,” I mutter.

In the receiving line, Vic and I both get a good long look at Susan, Cameron, and Cameron’s baby wife. We agree that all their necks looks unmolested, but Vic promises that he and Steve will keep an eye on their houses just in case. Vic pulls Susan aside, convinces her he’s a researcher for the CDC, and has some questions about her daughter’s death. She’s so grief-stricken, she takes him at his word.

Back at work, I prepare myself for the repercussions of last night’s laboratory lesson. Every year there are a few soft hearts who can’t deal with it and drop out, and this year is no exception. I was right about Lynn. But Tom and Kelsey are missing, too. As the rest of the class files in, I quickly check the database. Lynn asked to be re-assigned to the library, while the brother and sister team are going to be debriefed and let go. I lose over half of my students every semester, but every one hurts.
Unfortunately, Shelley is still here, sitting front and center. Her eyes look a little puffy.
When my seven remaining students are settled in, I get started.

“I know last night was harsh,” I say. “But you have to know what these creatures
are capable of.”
