“What are sisters for if not to point out the things the rest of the world is too polite to mention.”―Claire Cook
When she was eight, my younger sister—at the middle of my seven sisters—had to write the story of our family for a class assignment. As one of ten kids, she pretty much just had to do one page for each of us and her book would easily be biggest word count in her class.
I’d say she nailed it.
I’m smiling because we’re sisters. I’m laughing because there’s nothing you can do about it.

I always feel a bit sorry for people without sisters. (And a bit jealous…)

As I am a sister, I can vouch for having to take the rough with the smooth!

My sisters Janet, Eileen and I shared a room. We had deep and serious discussions at night after we had been told to go to bed. We often pondered whether our sister Barbara was the most beautiful girl in the ENTIRE world. Eileen (the author of the book about her family) was sure Barbara was indeed the MOST beautiful. Janet (a whole year older) felt Barbara was very glamorous. Me – with the experience of being a year older than Janet – felt that although Barbara was very beautiful, there were probably girls we had never seen who might be more beautiful. Nonetheless – despite the fact that EVERY night Eileen had ME take her down the hall to the bathroom so the monsters would not get her, declared Barbara to be her BEST sister !

I loved this. It reminds me of a poem I wrote in Kindergarten, which my mother saved and is now framed and hanging in my sister’s house. I don’t remember all of it, but the end goes like this:
“I love fried chicken like the dickens, but most of all I love my Megan.”
Happy New Year!

This was a fun story to read. I can’t imagine a family that large. Only 4 of us and we were run like a military organization. I have written several stories about my only sister. She was fodder for a whole book. Life is entertaining if nothing else.
