My kids give the pets computer names, so after we got Laptop Kitten, the dog was obviously Peripheral. (Peri for short…) She decided it was her best day ever. Not only did she get to chase her ball in the ocean, but an entire order of fish & chips was dropped in front of her. She can’t wait to go back.

Actually, we took the car ferry to the Isle of Arran in the Firth of Clyde (west of Glasgow). It has these amazing microclimates, so there was something there for all of us. While one went jumping off mountains with his paraglider wing, the rest of us sampled beer, visited artists’ studios, tasted our way through a whiskey distillery, hiked to the 4500-year-old ring of standing stones, and of course hit the beaches. We finished up with island-made ice cream on an outdoor terrace while waiting for the ferry back. With the unbelievable sunshine (80-degrees! Scotland! Really!!) and gorgeous scenery, it was the best one-day vacation ever. Oh, and we had to bring the car because of all the beer and whiskey that wanted to come home with us.

That sounds like my kind of place. I love both the sea and the mountains and forests. Quaint villages. Jealous

Surprisingly, it was the Isle of Arran, a one-hour drive plus one-hour car ferry from Glasgow. Someone there called it “miniature Scotland” and it really did seem to have just about everything. Would I enjoy it as much in February as on a freakishly gorgeous day in July? The jury is still out…

We can’t get over how you can go just a little way and the place changes completely. Did you make it to the Highlands on your trip?
