My garden today doesn’t care that it’s November in Scotland and winter will soon take down those hopeful blooms. I know its roots are deep, and with care, the garden will grow and bloom again.
Following this week’s election in the States, a friend sent me a quote. “Even the darkest night will end and the sun will rise.”—Victor Hugo
But actually, I realized, I don’t need to be upset. Just like my garden responds to the changing seasons, the election worked the way it was supposed to, responding to the will of the majority. I sent this quote back to my friend.
Nations, like stars, are entitled to eclipse. All is well, provided the light returns and the eclipse does not become endless night. Dawn and resurrection are synonymous. The reappearance of the light is the same as the survival of the soul. —Victor Hugo
As an American expat now living in Scotland, I’m surrounded by history that goes back thousands of years, gardens that come back every year, and a sun that rises every day.**
**(We do, however, also have guest rooms in case you would rather view the next 1463 dawns from outside the USA.)

Guest room, you say? Tempting, Barb. You don’t mind if I bring my wife, adult children, and grandchildren, do you?

We might have to post a schedule for the bathroom, but we have to make sacrifices for refugees. (I hope you’re okay with scheduling your pee break for 3am.)

THANKS for offering respite in your lovely sanctuary. I’ve been processing post election trauma by planning to create JOY through music and dance events here at home in the DC area. Avoiding the sickening TV news, FB and IG posts has freed up my time to get cracking on booking bands and callers and dance halls! Wheeee! Swing your partner, Do Si Do and strip the willow!

That seems like the healthiest response possible! Wheeee to you too.

now you can probably big bucks by renting that out to Americans who will need a break during these upcoming 4 years )

It could be a little respite care before returning to the fray.

As my grandmother often said to me when things went wrong and times were hard, Barb,”It will come and it will go – it always does.” It took me a long time to understand, realise, and accept that. But she was right. Sending hugs from Wales.

Enough rooms for millions of heartbroken and worried Democrats? You’d have to display a new sign on Arran- Standing Room Only. I live in Wales and find myself depressed and worried enough to seek sanctuary down the nearest Rabbit Hole so I don’t have to watch Trump’s coronation and the descent from morals of so many people. Huge Hugs Barb.

No such thing! Arran is a holiday destination, so loads of room for all.

Delightful photos of your garden and the sky. And you make a good point about the garden responding to changes. A lovely example for us to follow. 🌞

Just keep the third week in August open for your loyal followers. (I mean Dusk’s loyal followers) xo

That week is sacred. (The American refugees will have to understand, although they might want to join us for the writing seminars.)

What incredible photos. Scotland is my favorite place on the planet, and I can’t spend enough time there. I shall be ignoring the news for the next four years so I don’t have to hear the voice that triggers me and so many others.
Don’t get me started on this election.

I completely agree. My plan is to ignore any news that doesn’t begin with “Residents of Scotland were delighted today when…” That’s what I did last time and it worked.
Mostly.
Kinda.
Okay, occasionally.

What a beautiful photo. We took many when we were in Scotland – such a gorgeous place (north and islands) and such history! I’m so old and have seen so many ‘regime’ changes in the US that I just sit back and accept that this is part of life here. I was disgusted by many things that happened in the last four years, including the prosecution of parents, pro-lifers, and Catholics. I hope that will end.

Why isn’t someone saying that we as Americans all want the same things? This is not a new concept, it’s the one we started with.
If we all believe the words of the preamble to the constitution, then we all want our families, our children, our friends, and our neighbors to be safe, healthy, and optimistic about their futures. We want to feel that the jobs we do are valued, that out children will have better lives than we do, and that our country is a place we can be proud of.
I too would love to see an end to the divisive rhetoric and demonization of each side to the other. My parents voted opposite parties for half a century and still managed to talk over dinner. My wish for America (and not just for the next four years) is that we could all pull back from that brink. It has absolutely GOT to be the case that Americans have more in common than our differences.

such wise words! and what a lovely offer to join you in your sanctuary; although it might get a bit crowded, because even I want to join you, and your garden, and your world. I have no reason whatsoever to be so very sad, despondent, wondering why my mind boggles over that result – as I have no intention ever to return to those un-united states. But I am gutted, sad, disappointed and I can’t get my head around the fact that THE PEOPLE have voted the way they did. I’ve such pity with all those who have to endure the coming 4 years, who will suffer, who might/will die because of what’s to come – and I don’t know what it will take to heal all the very good people. I’m also very thankful for living in my little paradise, as imperfect and humble as it is, and you are right, the garden doesn’t care if we do it right or wrong. Tomorrow I’ll plant a few dozens tulips and narcissus I bought today, together with fresh soil, I’ll clean the pots and shall plant it all with love, tenderness, understanding and a bit of hope that all will be well – eventually.

I somehow survived these last 8 years but not sure about the next 4. If I were in better health, I’d be looking for elsewhere as is my daughter, but I fear there is no where to run. Kindness and the constitution have vanished from sight. I live in a deeply red state that was turning purple. Once the dictatorship ensues, there will be no color.

Travel in countries with thousands of years of good and bad leaders, wars with previous allies, etc. etc. kind of gives you a broader picture of life. America is simply too young to know how history repeats itself and what being bombed does to your awareness of the fleeting safety of any regime and how power passes on.
