Checking in OK
Tolkien’s Èowyn was a badass royal princess who saw herself as a shield-maiden, and who won the victory no man could achieve. Storm Èowyn was just as badass. Somehow there should be a message there.
All I know is that last night I went to The Shurig, our local pub, for the usual Thursday night meetup of The Movers & The Shakers. (Named because most of us are old enough to either have tremors in some limb or walk with aid of a stick.) Felicity, the pub’s landlord, had just set down plates of the Burns Night special (haggis, neeps & tatties of course).
Suddenly, every mobile in the place started playing an incredibly loud siren. Our phone screens all flashed up a Red Alert notice, warning us to get home and stay there. (My favorite part was the last line, ordering us to stay away from coastal areas. On an island.)
But… this was Scotland. There were drinks and haggis on our tables. Nobody got up, of course. Everyone finished their dinner and drinks and eventually staggered home.
Today we only had power now and then, and internet less than that. Our garden furniture and some of the limbs from the palm trees fetched up against the fence at the bottom of our garden. The winds were projected to be 80-100MPH, while the waves pounded up over the beach, the road, and up the hill. Part of the seawall collapsed, the road is blocked by debris and fallen trees in several places, and media is warning everyone to stay inside.
Even the Shurig is closed. But Felicity says they will be serving their Burns special Saturday night. And (this is Scotland) there will be singing.

OH! I’ve had you on my mind since we, over here, got the message that Eowyn was churning your way. I’m glad you checked in “OK”. Mary Janr

Glad to hear you are all safe over there, and most importantly, had your Robbie Burns Dinner! Thanks for the video of the Address to a Haggis. Love it! The most fun I ever had was attending a Robbie Burns Night party at the Sargent’s Mess at a British Army Training base. Hugs from sunny Spain. xo

glad you are all okay and I love the Scottish spirit, have to finish our night out, not going to be moved by some damn massive storm! I also am impressed by the storm name, ours are always so lame here. p.s. the coastal warning is the best!

We missed our annual Robbie Burns Night out because I had a wicked cold. And I missed my favorite meal of haggis, neaps and tatties. I did eat a lot of this when I was in Scotland to the surprise of the people on our tour. Must be my 12% Scottish genes.
I’ve been following the storm and it was might impressive. I’m glad you all survived relatively well.
And I read about a new ferry going into service to one of the islands. Is that you? I was surprised that I saw the article!

We’ve just had Burns night in the house with seven other members of the family. There were four original haggis served up but I can verify that there’s a vegetarian variation available that’s tasty enough and was sampled and approved by the carnivores. One of the younger members asked, as he helped himself to more of the meaty one, what was in it. We didn’t tell him. We had the deafening/alarming klaxon on our phones for the last storm. It was at least as frightening as the storm itself. Glad you survived this one. :)
