You belong in the Hall of Fame!
I’m rubbish at blog awards. Oh, sure, I love to get them. I get all sentimental, and I mean—no, really I do—to acknowledge them with the humble gratitude and appreciation they deserve. Only… I don’t. While I sit around wondering how I can possibly top the charming and gracious blog acceptance posts of the incredibly generous people who nominate me for the awards, life happens. Instead of my blog posts.
I’ve been away for most of the summer and haven’t even managed to maintain the most basic digital connections, let alone acknowledge the several lovely awards that people have tagged me in. So at this point, can I be counted on to offer these lovely fellow bloggers (and tweeters and FB posters) the honest thanks their thoughtfulness deserves? Those (many) who have sent similar awards—indeed, just about anyone who has ever met me—already know the answer to this.
Well, there it is. So instead, I’ll recycle an earlier post (which, hopefully, won’t be noticed by any of the four people who originally read it), thanking all of you, and waiting for my mother’s ghost to whap me upside the head for failing the good manners she kept thinking she’d raised me with.
My Acceptance Speech:
First of all, I’d like to thank all of you for the misguided thoughtful awards, and thank Tina Fey for not writing a humor blog containing the definitive blog award acceptance speech. I thank my parents, who (despite their attempts to hide it from my nine siblings) always liked me best. Obviously, I need to thank the man who has always been there for me, tirelessly devoting himself to making sure I face the world at my best – Antonio, who does my hair. Now comes the part of the speech where I grab my audience by their balls heartstrings and tug as I drop my voice tenderly to thank my four children, who taught me how to say NO and I mean you; don’t make me come back there because you’ll be sorry, and … where was I? Oh, yeah – you rock, kids. [waits through the clapping and cheers, modestly wiping away a tear] So I’ll just (virtually) lift this award above my head in a fist pump to acknowledge all the readers who made this the 27th happiest day of my life. (I would have moved it higher in the rankings, but let’s face it: I am still overweight, uncrowned, and just not that into world peace.)
Now, most of these awards come with rules that say I’m supposed to list seven things you might not know about me. Okay, here are my seven things:
- My family has a genetic defect which compels us to accidentally memorize recipes that involve chocolate chips.
- As head of Human Resources, I’ve had to fire myself. More than once. (Unfortunately, I never got to control the number of zeros on my severance check…)
- My younger sister is the seventh daughter of a seventh daughter, which means either that she is a witch, or that she will never have to pay for her own beer in Ireland.
- I actually only could think of six things, but I figure nobody will read this whole list or notice this one here in the middle.
- After four kids, I will still be able to recite Good Night Moon on my deathbed.
- I don’t take vacations where you have to put on shoes to get to the bathroom.
- I used to say if you get the chance to try something you’ve always wanted to do and you don’t do it, it will be the sign that you’re getting old. That explains a lot of things in my past like skydiving and early encounters with law enforcement. What I now realize is that getting old beats the hell out of the alternative.
Now I’m supposed to name some bloggers who deserve the award more than me (that would be all of you!). But in fact, there are some who deserve every possible award out there that a writer can bestow. Who are they?
YOU belong in the Hall of Fame!
You may not know this, but August is Amazon Review Month, and there is a Hall of Fame just waiting to add your name. Blogger Terry Tyler is recording those who post a book review on Amazon and then tweet it to #AugustReviews.
Never written a review before? It’s SOOOO easy. All you have to do is fill in a couple of blanks:
I liked this book because ______. My favorite part was ______ . People who like ______ stories would enjoy this book.
For a little more book reviewing info and easy how-tos, Rosie Amber tells you everything you need to know here, and provides such easy to use templates and guidelines that reviews practically write themselves.
And what do you get out of it? You’ll be in the rolls of the Hall of Fame, not to mention the undying and eternal gratitude of writers and your fellow readers.
One month. One review. One tweet to #AugustReviews.
Because people who post a book review really do deserve all the awards.
I shall be joining the hall of fame if I remember to tweet…. . Enjoyed your post Barb – very amusing!

This is terrific, thanks so much! I love number 4, btw 🙂
I REALLY love the review template. I once sat next to a friend who reads all my books and had never left a review for any of them. I said, go on, please, and we had the usual convo about ‘I don’t know what to put’. So I sat next to her and said ‘just say you liked it. Then say why.’ 2 sentences. End of! Now she reviews other books she likes, too 🙂

(#4 is my personal fave too.)
So true about the reviews. Not everyone suffers from the verbal diarrhea I put into reviewing. And as an author I promise that those two sentences would mean the world to me.

I can talk about No.#4 too, because I enjoyed the WHOLE post, hope you’ve made it safely back to Scotland, think I have my dates right? Love the easy to use review template.

Yes we made it back to cloudy Glasgow and already missing sunny Spain. I’m scrambling into jeans to walk the dog before the wind turns to rain AND wind. BUT–my working wifi is a glorious thing to behold!

I’ve posted reviews, and then had someone tear my review apart, saying that I had no idea what I was talking about, that they knew whether or not the book was good or not. And to think, I’d always thought a review was about whether or not I liked a book and why I liked it. I should have felt vindicated by the other reviews this person also tore apart, but I didn’t. I felt angry at someone who felt that their opinion outweighed those of anyone else’s. Fortunately, that kind of angry reviewer is few and far between.
And I loved number four. LOL. : )
And your numerous awards were well earned, whether you admit it or not.

As a writer, sometimes it’s SO hard to take a bad review of one of my books. But I also know that I’m not allowed to say anything. (Even to the reviewer who gave a bad rating to my travel memoir book because she thought it was a book about elephants, saying that even though she found it funny and entertaining and well-written, it wasn’t just about elephants…)
On the other hand, as a reviewer, I’ve had authors (and others, but mostly authors) tear into my reviews and demand that I change things because other people with buckets of qualifications had already weighed in and said the book was wonderful.
Sure the Amazon review system has definite flaws and potential for abuse. But I remember the old days where a few reviewers for newspapers and periodicals had immense power. Those days are gone, and the social voting of readers who take the time to put their thoughts up on Amazon is something that is transforming the book selling world.
So all the blessings of the heavens on you for taking the time to post reviews, and for standing by the posts you put up. Readers and reviewers like you are transforming publishing and literature.

Wow, thank you Barb, that was a huge compliment!
By the way, my review was actually complementary and the person who tore it apart was not the author. Just a self-imposed literary expert. And I did do more reviews. Thank you!
