They’re not keeping “them” out. They’re keeping “us” out.

Millions took part in over 600 marches across America to protest immigration policy. [image credit: nbcnews.com ]
I wish I could join the millions marching to protest immigration policy in the US. Nobody had to march to admit our family when they were fleeing religious persecution and economic disaster in Ireland. Or in Scotland. Or in Germany. Or in Poland. My grandparents weren’t taken from their parents and put into baby jail.
They knew it would be okay to come to America because the Lady said so. She rose from pennies raised by French and American school children, and she raises a lamp against the darkness. She says welcome. She says that’s who we are.

Statue of Liberty at night
Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!” cries she
With silent lips. “Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!
–Emma Lazarus, 1883
Are we really ready to turn off her lamp?

It’s beyond belief.

It’s like a national identity has been hijacked and we aren’t allowed to be anything but observers.

I dread to think how it will all end.

All the things we grew up telling ourselves we were are being set aside here. I’m so ashamed.

Sobering post. Plenty of shame to go around. Where is this all going?

I think you’re right. It feels like the US is being polarised into fixed sides in knee-jerk opposition. I’m very afraid of where it’s going.

I’m with you, Barb. I wish I could have been part of the demonstrations.

Reblogged this on Wanderings of an Elusive Mind and commented:
I believe as Barb Taub does, The Lady must be weeping inside her heart. https://barbtaub.com/2018/07/01/are-we-really-ready-to-turn-off-her-lamp-keepfamiliestogether-statueofliberty/

I have taken the liberty of reblogging your post – The Lady’s words are what keep buzzing around in my brain, and I weep that others seem not to hear them and to abide by them. I feel like we are being sucked into a muddy morass.

I’m starting to wonder if all those French school children who contributed their pennies to help build the Statue of Liberty should ask for a refund…

Perhaps it’s time for a new tea party, not of the conservative kind.

My ancestors came here from the Alsace-Lorraine region of France, because they were tired of being the rope in a tug of war (often literal war) between France and Germany. My husband’s came from Ireland to escape the potato famine. Of all the people I have EVER known, only one person isn’t mostly of immigrant blood, and even she is just half Cherokee.
We would not exist as a country without immigrants!

Apparently our president thinks we should give it a try. (The same president who is husband and son of immigrants…)

Where is all of this going? I’m afraid to think about it. We all need to be mindful of who we put in office, all the way from our local elected officials clear to the presidency.
