Frankly, my dear…
My brother is a fantastic woodworker. He makes gorgeous furniture that’s way too heavy to send from California to Scotland, and has an addiction to his laser-engraver. His latest lockdown project is to make wood signs engraved with favorite movie lines. He’s challenged us to tell our favorite lines, with one of the signs as our reward if he chooses ours to engrave.
Here are my first thoughts. Yes, I cheated a bit and added in a couple TV faves. (As I read them over, I’m starting to think my mind is not quite all sunshine and rainbows…)
“You’re going to burn in a very special level of Hell. A level they reserve for child molesters and people who talk at the theater.”—Firefly, 2002
“You know how to whistle, don’t you? You just put your lips together and blow.”—To Have and Have Not, 1944 “
“You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.” — The Princess Bride, 1987 [best writer quote ever]
“Face it, girls. I’m older and I have more insurance.”—Fried Green Tomatoes, 1991 [My role model]
“Frankly, my dear, I don’t give a damn.” – Gone With the Wind, 1939
“I’ll get you, my pretty, and your little dog, too!” – The Wizard of Oz, 1939
“Wendy: Hamlet dies, and the king dies, and the queen dies and Ophelia dies, and Laertes dies….
All: [gasp…]
Wendy: ….but everybody who’s left lives happily ever after.
All: Hurray!”—Peter Pan, screenplay for the 1954 musical version [sorry–no clip]
“Even artichokes have hearts.”—Amélie, 2001
“Honey? Where’s my super suit?”—The Incredibles, 2004
“If anyone orders merlot, I’m leaving. I am not drinking any fucking merlot!”—Sideways, 2004
“But what I do have are a very particular set of skills, skills I have acquired over a very long career, skills that make me a nightmare for people like you.”—Taken, 2008 [I like to think of this as my definition of motherhood…]
“Exercise gives you endorphins. Endorphins make you happy. Happy people just don’t shoot their husbands, they just don’t.”—Legally Blonde, 2001 [Clearly, I’ll need to get more exercise during lockdown. A LOT more exercise]
These are all great! My favourite is the Gone With The Wind quote. I think I’ve used it a lot these past few weeks.

Has to be Gone with the Wind…
Mine would be “None shall pass,” from LOTR…

Absolutely one of the best!

did you know that “you shall not pass” was not in the book? I learned that when I made that sign, listened to the scene a few times (even though my pinball game LOTR, says it to me) https://photos.app.goo.gl/ZK3j27E2Vc9RwBnc7

“Frankly, my dear, I don’t give a damn.” – actually a family saying as a last word in an argument – said with the contumely the phrase warrants.

I said that one to one of my kids, and she looked at me like I was speaking martian.

“You’re going to need a bigger boat.” ~ Jaws
I love this quote. My dad started referencing it by saying things like “You’re going to need a bigger hammer,” and “ You’re going to need a bigger brain.” 🙂

I still love the flying monkeys threat, but can’t remember it exactly)🐒

I loved the monkeys too, but they didn’t inspire any particularly unforgettable quotes I think.(Except for “Fly, my pretties, fly!” which—like “Play it again Sam” in Casablanca—never made it into the actual movie)

I love that ‘Taken’ quote, especially the last bit: “I will look for you, I will find you. And I will kill you.” Deadpan delivery is brilliant! How about ” Badges? We don’t need no stinking badges!” Blazing Saddles?

I think the badges line is originally from Treasure of the Sierra Madre (Bogart again). Loved Blazing Saddles too.

It did originate there but the line was slightly different: “Badges? We ain’t got no badges. We don’t need no badges. I don’t have to show you any stinkin’ badges!” and that was slightly different from the novel. It is a well used line!

There was a period in my life—not my finest hour—when “Bahhhd-gis? We don’ need no stinkin’ bahhhd-gis” made it into my conversations with alarming frequency…

I have two. They are both from Casablanca.
#1: Yvonne is at the bar as Rick walks up.
Yvonne: Where were you last night?
Rick: That was so long ago, I don’t remember.
Yvonne: Will I see you tonight?
Rick: I never make plans that far in advance.
#2: Dialogue between Rick and Capt. Renault.
Capt: Renault: What in heaven’s name brought you to Casablanca?
Rick: I came for the waters.
Capt: Renault: Waters? What Waters? We’re in the desert.
Rick: I was misinformed.
Here’s a clip that has both of them:

Curse you! I fell down the YouTube hole and ended up watching almost the whole movie in clips. Mostly because every scene is clipworthy. I always cry at the scene with La Marseillaise…

I’ve been cursed by less agreeable people than you. Do you know the history of that scene? In the whole movie there were only three people who were born in the U.S. All the people in that scene where refugees from Germany and France (and probably a few other countries). As the song progressed, they started to cry. I think that is why that scene is so moving.
