It hasn’t always been easy lately to be an American. It’s never been easy to be a woman. In 9 minutes and 42 seconds I’ll never forget, United States House of Representatives Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez gives an unforgettable lesson in how to do both. Proudly.
After fellow US Rep Ted Yoho of Florida accosted AOC on the steps of the US Capitol, calling her a “f*****g bitch”, he then failed to apologize, citing his “passion, loving my God, my family, and my country”. Here is her response.

Strong women terrify weak men. Case in point . . . Women have always been the stronger sex, we just let men believe the opposite because we have a soft spot for children.

Insulting your opponent does have a long tradition, especially in politics. But there’s a difference (I hope) between a clever insult or even a gripe regarding their voting and party, and one that simply piles obscenity on their gender.
I think what resonates for me and for so many other women is that we have lived this, swallowed these insults, gritted out smiles when ordered, and listened to lame half-baked “didn’t say it/mean it/ you can’t take it” explanations.

She is The National Treasure. If the Country is to survive and begin to repair the harm that has been done to its people and its reputation, we need leagues more like her. I would write her name on the ballot for the Oval Office anytime and despite her age, her maturity level towers over most of those in Washington, save some other Progressives. Barbara, thank you for posting this. Having worked as a Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence Worker, in my undergrad and graduate filed work, I know deeply pervasive this kind of attitude to women extends.

I completely agree with you Léa. I think this speech resonates with women everywhere because we ARE her. We’ve been on the receiving end of this garbage and mostly did what AOC started to do. We took it. But she’s absolutely right. It’s time to change.

It is my great pleasure. I have also forwarded it to those I know who don’t blog (yes there are such people out there…) Perhaps our children and grandchildren will see a better life? When I hear A.O.C., she gives me hope. Thank you for increasing its visibility.

I know there are those who are appalled at the protests going on all over the country, and all over the world. Despite the hundreds of thousands protesting peacefully, there are unfortunate instances of violence as well. But I’m still just SO impressed and hopeful that the ones protesting peacefully are showing a commitment and drive and belief that will change the world. AOC is a wonderful example of that huge force for change.

I agree. So often, there are those that take advantage of a situation to further their own interests and I think that’s what’s going on here. I detest that part but admire those who stand up and speak out. I saw a documentary about AOC done during her campaigning and was impressed. Although she strikes fear into the hearts of many because she is so progressive, I feel she and others like her are what we need to save this country.

I am 60 this year. I am worn out. I am tired of hearing (as I did in my review last year) that there is NO discrimination against women at our company … AND then here comes a beacon of light shining on the new generation. EXCELLENT. She looked it right in its white male face and called it like it is. (oh, btw, if you love your GOD and your COUNTRY then you can call women f****ing B**ch ? )

To add injury to insult, her opponent’s defense is “I love my wife and daughters” (because not referring to them as a “f*****g bitch” earns a moral get-out-of-jail-free pass), followed by the “did not” defense (of something with several witnesses), and finished up with the “wasn’t talking to her” explanation (so presumably he was calling the only other person there with him, Rep. Roger Williams, R-Texas, a ““f*****g bitch”?)

I watched her on CNN. I LOVED her response to that arrogant, self-serving twit. Unfortunately, I seriously doubt that he understood or even listened. Last week, I interviewed someone for a six-figure income position. He referred to me, his potential employer, in a condescending tone, as “dear.” Unbelievable.

It’s time for the good old boys club to close, permanently. We need more like her but even women are afraid to vote for her. The garbage I hear out of women’s mouths shocks me. Husband has the final word on everything and she does as directed. Even in this day and age. There were some very well qualified female candidates for the presidency and they never got off the ground. It’s still and old white man who is at least smart enough to know he will need a woman as second in command. Don’t get me wrong, he’ll get my vote but why are we so afraid to put a woman there? This young Congresswoman has more smarts than the good old boys. Sighing deeply.
