A math teacher did once tell me there was no such thing as calculus in the real world… I’ve always taken great comfort in that.

My mind goes way back to junior high, boggled by that train leaving Denver going 60 miles an hour when a car is leaving New York going 60 miles an hour … I’d never, ever be able to use my algebra to figure out when they’d meet.

I know it sounds cheesy but math can be a great tool for independence in the real world. Know how exponential growth and finances work and the world is yours! 🙂

At the beginning of the year I had some visitors who were incredulous at those who had started to show concern for COVID19. I told them it was a simple mathematical progression. You can see what was happening in Spain and Italy and the damn thing had started here in the US. It was only about 13 people at the time who had died in the US. Now it exceeds 150,000. MATH was ignored… and now look at the consequences. I think if we had a president who had passed (on his own) basic algebra he would be able to read the plots of deaths from COVID19 and understand that the US does NOT have it ‘under control’.

OH – that is good. I saw the original interview (now I can’t watch a trump interview without picturing sarah cooper!) but this is a good take on the original. So damn frustrating.

Barb, I promise you that the real world and math are mutually exclusive.
If 1 plus 1 equals two, how come there are so many large families in the world?

Alas, that is not always the case and 1×1 still equals one. I worked in Child Protection and at a private therapy center so I know the other side of the equation all too well. Besides, you can’t deny, math is still a four letter word! 🤣
