But there are roses, there are still roses. In the damp and the cold, on a bush that looks done, there’s a wide-open rose, still. Look at the colour of it.

I’ve heard you have that magical elixir known as WATER over there in your garden. Mine is bare, dry dirt.

You Californians would be amazed at what we can do with an island’s worth of magical elixir! (Of course, this is Scotland, so we have to wait for ten years before we can call it whisky…)

Those late roses are such a lovely gift.

Somehow these late roses are the most wonderfully scented ones of the year.

OOO lovely. As is the quote.
I must remember never to approach your garden. Not event think of it. Oops, I thought of it. God save it from the thoughts of a black thumbed plant-withering witch.

My garden can’t quite make up its mind. Half of the plants have shed their leaves, and the other half are carrying on as if summer were still here…

That’s how I feel! One afternoon, I’ll be in shirtsleeves turning over the dirt, and the next I’ll be scraping ice off the car windows.

We have some of these hardy bloomers, too! But now it’s getting to the hard freeze nights, so I don’t know for how much longer.

I’ve been cutting them and bringing inside just in case. And I’ve already put the hanging baskets into the greenhouse. But I’m loving the late blooms while they last.

We still have roses too, and geraniums! And the hanging baskets are hanging on. Also, I love that Ali Smith series, about to read ‘Winter’ again.

And Amazon just delivered Water Dancer, recommended by you. Books and roses–just doesn’t get better!

It really doesn’t! It’s turned cold here now though, and frosty, which might put paid to the roses, but it looks absolutely beautiful.

I think the poor climate has given up on trying to make seasonal sense…

They are so beautiful, they almost look fake- like paper roses.
