Tapas, pinchos, Spanish wine, and beer. There’s a point where the lodging doesn’t matter so much. Okay, so we never actually reached that point, but we certainly gave it our best shot.

How many days did you book for? How long are you planning on staying?

Luckily, only three days.

Lots of tapas and lots more wine should ease you through it 🙂

It’s not looking very promising. But then, you’ll get a chance to meet the real natives.

Yes, but they were mostly bent double laughing at the sight of me begging the dog to please go potty in the microscopic sliver of dirt between the trees and the metal grates that surrounded every scrap of planting—which she knew perfectly well was just a disgusting idea.

The Glass-Half-Empty traveller says “At least the (banging/pounding/shouting/COPIOUS cigarette-smoking) construction work stopped at seven o’clock.”
The Glass-Half-Full traveller says, “Madrid! Tapas crawl—hell yeah!”
The deal breaker? No kettle in the “fully furnished” 2-bedroom flat. Not even a microwave.

The singing that started when the bars closed was certainly a special reminder of home…

Oh, I wouldn’t worry, Barb. These are just some spirited Spanish hooligans that wanted to say ‘Tag, you’re it’.
Now it’s up to you to track them down and tag their crib in a colourful receipt.

We went for tapas and tinto de verano instead. Please don’t judge me.

Nor were the photos of the flat being in the center of a construction zone. Hmmm….

Whilst the personal calligraphy is concerning, I’ve got my eye on what appears to be a high-water mark on those doors. Are you in a flood zone? Did the construction workers hit a water main? Hmmm…

I don’t think it was an actual load-up-the-ark flood, but renovations were about waist-high in the lobby too. Luckily we were on top floor—6th floor by American standards, 5th by the ancient one-person but blessedly working lift—so the flooding wasn’t nearly as intrusive as the banging/pounding/ sawing/ chain-smoking/ paint fumes/ yelling that all commenced at 7AM. (Including the cement mixer that drove up, blocked the entrance, and happily began churning away before it was even quite light out. But I’m not bitter…)

I’ll blog it, I promise. (No newspaper reports, not even of the way I face-planted at entrance to Royal Palace.)
